Field Sobriety Tests
Field Sobriety Tests (FSTs) are physical and mental exercises that police use during their DUI investigation. The Nation Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) designed these tests to measure your ability to perform divided attention tasks. NHTSA claims these tests measure your ability to drive safely because driving is a divided attention task.
California Courts have noted that police officers are looking at four factors during FSTs to determine whether you are safe to drive: (1) your ability to concentrate; (2) your ability to follow directions; (3) your coordination during the tests; and (4) your ability to balance. NHTSA |
