The three feet for safety act went into effect this Tuesday. The law requires motorists to keep a distance of three feet or more when passing cyclists. However, if road conditions, such as weather, traffic conditions, width of the highway, etc., do not allow a driver to give a cyclist 3 feet, then they must slow to a reasonable speed and pass only when it will not endanger the cyclist. A violation of this statute carries a $238 fine, and the fine will increase to $960 if there is a collision with a cyclist and the cyclist is injured.
